Congrats to the Nobel prize winners 2021 in Economic Sciences!

The Florence Center for Data Science congratulates the Nobel prize winners 2021 in Economic Sciences David Cardfor his empirical contributions to labour economics” and Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbensfor their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships”.

We are especially happy to congratulate Guido W. Imbens, friend, colleague, and co-author of members of our research center (see the publication Mealli, F., Imbens, G. W., Ferro, S., & Biggeri, A., 2004)

This year’s Laureates’ work is of great importance especially due to their methodological contributions in emphasizing the role of data as a rich source of knowledge and of extracting relevant information from the data to answer key causal questions, which has been of great benefit to society. With their academic work over the years, they represented the importance of balancing statistical, mathematical, economic, and application-specific expertise.

“This year’s Laureates – David Card, Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens – have provided us with new insights about the labour market and shown what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments. Their approach has spread to other fields and revolutionised empirical research.”
