Doctoral Program (37th cycle) in Economics of the Tuscan Universities (Siena, Firenze and Pisa)

The Ph.D. programme in Economics of the Tuscan Universities is jointly offered by the Universities of Florence, Pisa and Siena. The programme takes three years of full-time study and aims at training students for a career as economists in research institutions. In the first year, students are required to take compulsory courses, which provide them with the knowledge and analytical skills needed to conduct highest-level research. Courses are mainly held at the University of Siena, where students are welcome to apply for accommodation facilities. In the second and third years, students can pursue their project at either university depending on their interests. The distinctive feature of the Ph.D. programme is its pluralistic approach. Emphasis is given to the historical dimension of economic phenomena, with courses in both economic history and the history of economic thought, and to seek interaction with other disciplines, such as law, biology, neurosciences and psychology. This multidisciplinary perspective stands out as unique in Italian postgraduate education, and allows students to acquire the breadth of views necessary to make significant contributions in the complex fields of economics and social sciences. Moreover, this approach has made the programme gain an international reputation and attract a large number of international students every year.
